What do you do?
I’m Communitech’s Community Relations Manager. My job is to get out and about in Waterloo Region, and act as a link and relationship builder between our flourishing tech community and all of the amazing organizations, events and people that are in the region.
How do you stay up to date with trends in your industry/field?
It’s hard! I read constantly – newspapers, social media, magazines and books. I also depend on the rest of my team at work for breaking news and trends. We all try to keep each other up-to-date on important news and trends.
In my spare time I’m an occasional fashion and lifestyle blogger and to keep up to date I’m glued to to pinterest, fashion, food and home decor magazines, as well as a couple hundred of blogs in my Digg reader.
What are your top five applications or programs?
My top five most used applications are BBM, Twitter, Instagram, Next Issue (I’m a magazine junky) and iTunes.
Best way to stay on top of email?
I don’t know! I’m frankly awful at email. I’m getting better at tackling email as soon as possible. I try to set aside time to go through my inbox a couple of times a week.
The best way to email me is to not. I’m far better at responding to in- person interactions!
What is your best time saving trick?
Planning! I tend to prepare my outfits, meals and general daily schedule the night before. It saves me a lot of time during my day when I don’t have to think about my next actions.
Favourite productivity tool?
My to-do list. Really. It motivates me to work through my day and celebrate small and large achievements by crossing them off my every-growing list.
One non-tech thing you can't live without?
I’m old-school: I love my filofax. It’s my life. I stopped using one for a while and was just losing track of my mind. I’ve gone back to my paper agenda and it’s helped me with my sanity.
Structure of your typical day, how do you divide your time?
I love my job because I don’t have a very typical day. Saying that, I tend to read the news and have a cup of coffee before I get ready for work in the morning. I’m typically at the Communitech Hub for the 9-5 work day. Depending on the day I may have evening events to attend for work. If not, then I’m normally out with friends for a drink either at Beertown or Imbibe and then at home cooking, hanging out in my home office trying to work on my blog, or reading.
What does your workspace look like?
My workspace at the hub tends to have multiple coffee cups on it, my laptop and stacks and stacks of paper.
My workspace at home is one of my favourite rooms. It has many awesome features: my purse collection, my beautiful iMac, a bookshelf stacked with inspiration and a couch for napping thinking.
