Kat Edmonson

Singer & songwriter

Kat Edmonson is a singer and songwriter originally from Houston, Texas. She is currently on tour promoting her third album The Big Picture. Listen to her music here.

What do you do?

I’m a dreamer, first, but my career is in singing and songwriting.

How do you stay up to date with trends in your industry/field?

I don’t make a great effort to stay up with trends, personally, but I do check in via my management team to find out what’s going on in the music world. I ask a lot of my musician friends, as well. Many of them know the scoop and have a greater interest in that than I do.

What are your top five applications or programs?

The apps I use most regularly are Instagram, Notes (to make lists on my iPhone), Pinterest, Skype, and @Venue (to keep track of my merchandise sales).

Best way to stay on top of email?

I flag every one that I don’t answer so I know what’s left to answer.

What is your best time saving trick?

I turn off all my electronic devices and I check in with myself to see what’s most important to me and then I reprioritize based on what I've learned.

One non-tech thing you can’t live without?

My imagination.

What does your workspace look like?

My primary workspace is where I write songs. Quite frequently, it’s in the shower or the car but, I can write anywhere. I don’t require a particular atmosphere. When I have to take care of business, however, I have a small desk in my bedroom that I work at.

Structure of your typical day, how do you divide your time?

I write first thing in the morning and I go to the park nearby where I feel most centered. I, then, make a list of what’s important to me in the day and I start ticking things off the list. If I’m on the road, I do the same thing without making it in to the park (unless I’m lucky and find one somewhere). I’m often working from the back of a tour van.

What is the greatest piece of career advice/wisdom you've ever received?

Trust yourself.

Who would you like to see featured on Ways We Work?

Aaron Thurston: my drummer and also owner of Lucy Music, one of the foremost private party band companies out of Brooklyn.
